Social Studies Learning Journeys
Learning Journeys are key Student Development Experiences (SDEs) that provide all students with meaningful opportunities to learn beyond the classroom. Carefully curated across levels, these experiences enable students to explore their Singaporean identity through the lenses of arts, culture, and heritage.
Aligned with the Primary Social Studies and Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) syllabuses, these learning journeys are designed to deepen students’ understanding of national identity while nurturing important citizenship dispositions. Each learning site is thoughtfully selected to complement curriculum content, ensuring purposeful and relevant learning.
Curriculum time is set aside for these experiences as part of Social Studies Field-based Learning (FbL), allowing students to connect classroom learning with real-world contexts in an engaging and authentic way.
P1: Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden
At Jacob Ballas Children's Garden, Primary 1 students explore their immediate environment as part of their Social Studies learning. Through hands-on experiences, students observe a variety of plants and living organisms, developing an appreciation of environmental diversity and how living things coexist.
This experience supports their understanding of the world around them and fosters a sense of curiosity, awareness, and responsibility towards the environment.
P2: Singapore Sports Hub
Primary 2 students visit Singapore Sports Hub to explore how sports can foster national pride and unity. Through this experience, students learn about Singapore’s sporting achievements and how shared sporting experiences bring people together.
Students also gain an understanding of the role of the Sports Hub in promoting healthy living, supporting sporting excellence, and contributing to the development of the sports industry in Singapore.
P3: Geylang Serai Heritage Gallery
Primary 3 students learn about Singapore’s multicultural heritage and the communities that make up our society. They explore the history of Geylang Serai and the cultural practices of the Malay-Muslim community.
Through stories and shared experiences, students gain an appreciation of the community’s contributions to building and nurturing multicultural Singapore.
P4: Kreta Ayer Heritage Gallery
Primary 4 students visit Kreta Ayer Heritage Gallery to deepen their understanding of Singapore’s history and the contributions of different communities. The learning experience focuses on the role of the Chinese community in shaping Singapore’s development.
Students gain insights into Singapore’s multicultural heritage and develop an appreciation of the stories and experiences of the people and families who have contributed to nation-building.
P5: Indian Heritage Centre
At Indian Heritage Centre and the Little India precinct, Primary 5 students explore the culture and heritage of the Indian community in Singapore. They learn about the community’s contributions to nation-building and how diverse cultural influences have shaped Singapore’s multicultural identity.
Through engagement with cultural art forms, museum exhibits, and the surrounding environment, students develop a deeper appreciation of the Indian community’s role in Singapore’s growth and identity.
P6: Asian Civilization Museum
Primary 6 students visit the Asian Civilisations Museum to explore Southeast Asia’s cultural and historical connections. Through a guided experience centred on the mythical Makara, students journey through the region’s past by examining artefacts, artworks, and stories.
This experience enables students to understand the cultural ties between Southeast Asian countries and examine how Singapore’s cultural heritage has evolved over time through diverse influences.
